Spuistraat 88A

In December 1877, the new head office of the Roelofs & Son company, traders in coffee and tea, was opened at Spuistraat 88A. Designed by architect Bijvoets, it took two years to build the building with its unique facade,by Amsterdam standards, in the Eclectic style. The natural stone facade is richly decorated and the inside of the building was also covered with fine English tiles and decorated with the warmest colours.

The tea and coffee trade was conducted on the ground floor and mezzanine. On the upper floors there was space for storage and office. Over the years, the tea trade disappeared and this special monument was converted into a lovely house, where many elements of the original tea trade have been preserved on the ground floor and mezzanine.

Upon entering the building on the ground floor, the former retail space on the right has been converted into a large living-dining area with open kitchen equipped with professional equipment. The open connection with the authentic tea cabinets above, on the loft, provides a very atmospheric and particularly charming space with a ceiling height of no less than 4.5 m.
In the past, this space was also used as a parking garage for a car, which is still possible. In addition, the zoning plan also allows use as office or retail space.

On the mezzanine floor at the rear is a beautiful office and a toilet. From the landing you can reach the loft where the old storage cupboards are reminiscent of the bygone days of the coffee and tea trade and today very useful as storage space.

On the first floor you will find a spacious living room at the front with a cozy wood stove, a beautiful old wooden floor and patio doors giving way to two balconies. This living room with beamed ceiling and large mirrors on the walls has a ceiling height of no less than 3.7 m. With a few steps you reach the cozy kitchen at the rear. Due to this difference in level, the kitchen has a nice view through to the living room.

The second floor completely occupies the master bedroom, with a wonderfully large bedroom, bathroom en suite with a double walk-in shower, sink, toilet and bidet. At the rear is an en suite large walk-in closet room where classic closet doors provide a special atmosphere.

On the third and fourth floors, a sturdy combination of modern steel fronts with glass and the preservation of original floors and details was chosen during the renovation. Together with the beam construction of the mansard roof and the many skylights, this creates two transparent and light floors. Here are 4 bedrooms, a bathroom, separate toilet and a lovely second sitting room.

The house is located in an authentic part of Amsterdam in the northern part of the Spuistraat. A wonderful place to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer: galleries, theatres, restaurant, clubs and a hee; extensive range of shops for daily shopping, the Nine Streets as well as luxury shopping centers, including Magna Plaza and De Bijenkorf.
The Central Station is within walking distance and offers excellent public transport options by train, metro, bus and tram. For fresh organic products you can visit the Noordermarkt on Saturdays. In short, living in the heart of Amsterdam with everything within reach!
